뉴욕의 비영리한인미술인 지원단체 알재단(대표 이숙녀)과 뉴욕한국문화원(원장직무대리 최현승)이 6일(현지시간) 2022년 대중강연시리즈의 두번째 프로그램 ‘Wook-Kyung Choi: Abstractions (최욱경: 추상)’을 공개한다.

최욱경 작가는 1960~70년대 활발히 팽창하던 한국 현대 미술계를 이끈 주인공이다.
강연에서는 빅토리아 성 큐레이터가 뉴욕한국문화원의 공식 유투브 채널(https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY)을 통해 최욱경 작가의 생전 업적과 작업 세계를 탐구한다.
최욱경 작가는 추상표현주의와 팝아트의 영향을 받은 회화로 자신만의 길을 개척했다. 그의 작업은 당시 한국 미술계를 지배했던 대중적인 움직임과는 극명한 대조(對照)를 이루며, 주류의 정통성과는 다른 길로 나아갔다. 비록 45세의 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠났지만, 한국 미술계에서 최욱경의 영향력은 현재 진행형이다. 2021년 10월 국립현대미술관에서는 최욱경 회고전을 개최하기도 했다.

빅토리아 성은 워커 아트 센터의 시각 예술부문 어소시에이트 큐레이터로 현대 미술가들과 함께 전시회, 출판물 및 공공 프로그램을 기획하고 있다. 최근 진행 중이거나 또는 앞으로 진행하게 될 프로젝트로는 작가 Laure Prouvost, Siah Armajani, Theaster Gates, Rayyane Tabet, Candice Lin, Shen Xin, Pao Houa Her 및 Pacita Abad의 개인전이 있다.
워커 아트 센터에 근무하기 전에는 링컨센터, 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA), 휘트니 미술관을 비롯한 뉴욕의 주요 문화 예술 기관에서 재직한 바 있다. 빅토리아는 하버드 대학교에서 역사학 학사와, 옥스포드 대학교에서 예술 및 시각 문화, 역사학 석사를 받고, 하버드 비즈니스 스쿨에서 MBA를 취득하였다.
대중강연시리즈는 뉴욕한국문화원과 알재단의 협력으로 2011년부터 시작된 장수 교육 프로그램으로 미국 현지 대중을 대상으로 깊이 있는 강연을 제공하고 있다. 올해는 코로나 바이러스 확산에 따라 온라인으로 강연을 공개하며, 7월 6일(수) 뉴욕한국문화원 유투브에 공개되면 누구나 청강할 수 있다. 강의 관련 질문이나 문의는 info@ahlfoundation.org 로 하면 된다.

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting Korean contemporary art, and the Korean Cultural Center New York are excited to announce the second part of their collaborative Online Public Lecture Series, featuring Victoria Sung, Associate Curator of Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center. Her lecture, titled Wook-Kyung Choi: Abstractions, will premiere on the Korean Cultural Center New York’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/KCSNY) Wednesday, July 6th, 2022.
The lecture will present a pioneering artist within Korea’s burgeoning contemporary art scene, Wook-Kyung Choi who carved out her own niche through her abstract expressionist and pop art-influenced paintings. Choi’s work stood in stark contrast to the popular movements that dominated the Korean art scene at the time, challenging established orthodoxy. Despite her early death at the age of 45, her influence and stature has continued to grow in Korea. In this lecture, Associate Curator of Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center Victoria Sung will delve into Wook-Kyung Choi’s relatively short, yet illustrious career, focusing on the paintings she made while living in the US during the 1960's and 70's.

Her recent and upcoming projects include solo shows with Laure Prouvost, Siah Armajani, Theaster Gates, Rayyane Tabet, Candice Lin, Shen Xin, Pao Houa Her, and Pacita Abad. Previously, she worked at arts and culture institutions in New York, including Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Victoria holds a BA in history from Harvard College, an MSt in the History of Art and Visual Culture from Oxford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
This annual public lecture series, conducted in cooperation with KCCNY, is designed to familiarize the general public of the New York Tri-State Area with the visual arts culture of Korea. Launched in 2011, it is one of the AHL Foundation’s longest-running programs. The lecture will be available on KCCNY’s YouTube channel. No registration is required.
